PCIe – Peripheral Control Interconnect Express – a high-speed interconnect component to link smart device components such as CPUs and storage devices together and transmit data between them. It is known as a bus and transmits 1 bit of data every clock cycle across its lanes. PCIe x4 has 4 lanes and so transmits 4 bits per clock cycle. There are successive generations of the PCIe bus, with each generation transmitting data twice as fast as the prior generation;

Hee is a table showing aspects of each PCIe generation;

As at August 2025 a PCIe 8 generation is being developed for 2028.
